What is the Federal Relay ?

Federal Relay was established under Public Law 100-542, the Telecommunications Accessibility Act of 1988. Federal Relay is a Federal Government service, which utilizes the FTS2001 network in order to allow Federal employees who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, deaf/blind and or have speech disabilities equal communication access. Federal Relay broadens employment and advancement opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Existing and New Features available through Federal Relay:

  • FedTRS (TTY, ASCII, Voice, VCO, HCO and Spanish)
    - VCO to VCO
    - VCO to TTY
    - HCO to HCO
    - Two-line VCO
  • FedVRS – Video Relay Service
  • FRSO – Relay Online
  • FedRCC – Relay Conference Captioning
  • Federal CapTel – Captioned Telephone

    Where can I use Federal Relay?

    Federal Relay is accessible domestically from work or home (fifty states, U.S. Territories/Possessions, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Marianas, and the District of Columbia). There is no cost for the end-user to use Federal Relay and no domestic toll (long distance) charge for calls made anywhere in the United States.
